UnBoxed - Lakeside Toweling
UnBoxed - Lakeside Toweling
Hello! It’s Jenelle Kent with all you need to know about my new range – Lakeside Toweling.
Lakeside Toweling is a range of 100% cotton toweling that is available in two different widths - 18" wide hemmed and 60" wide. There is so much to talk about with Lakeside Toweling – the possibilities, the texture, the colours, the projects and the different widths.
There are 20 SKU’s available in 18” wide with the long edge already hemmed - they are numbered 992. Eight of the 18" wide towelings have a thicker, slubby thread woven into the lengthwise threads to create a unique textural stripe element.
These are perfect for tea towels, dish towels, table napkins, table placemats and runners. Just cut the fabric to your desired length and hem the cut edges.
There are 6 SKU’s that are 60” wide - numbered 993. These are perfect for duvet covers, quilt backings, long lumbar pillows, tablecloths, and fringed throws.
When using 60” wide toweling for your quilt back, I recommend pre-washing to allow for any shrinking. The weight of the toweling on the back of a quilt makes the quilt very soft and snuggly. I find them perfect for sleeping under.
The possibilities for toweling are endless: think of it as another tool in the tool-box! This fabric can be used the same way as regular patchwork cottons; try including a little bit in your quilt. It is also fabulous for pillows, aprons, bags, oven mitts, appliqué backgrounds and all sorts of kitchenalia.
This is my Sea Salt quilt. It is made mostly with Lakeside Toweling but also includes some Bella Solids in the pinwheel blocks. It finishes at 80" x 80" and it is PTT217.
You can see in this photo that I have backed the quilt with toweling and, to reach the required width, I have sewn a width of 18” toweling through the 60” wide back. Also note the coordinating pillows, they are quick and easy to make, and they provide a beautiful finishing touch to your bedroom.
Another quilt, using Lakeside toweling, is the Garden Connection Quilt PTT-223 (82” square). This is a classic, French inspired style of quilt, with the timeless blend of florals and stripes.
On my Pieces to Treasure blog, I wrote about choosing different colours for this quilt and how to coordinate the fabrics with the woven striped toweling. (You can read that here: Garden Connection Quilt - Choosing Fabrics.)
I have also re-made the Stars and Stripes quilt - the original was made with my Picnic Point Toweling range. This time, I had the luxury of using a 60” wide toweling to create the stars, and I have mixed it with Moda basics to create the backgrounds and borders.
Stars & Stripes finishes at 80" x 80" and it is PTT 194.
It is easy to see the off white 60” wide textured backing in this photograph. The border for Stars and Stripes is cut lengthways to create a wonderful linear effect and mitred at the corners. There is an instructional video on my Blog and YouTube channel which is helpful.
Pillows are fun to make and the quality and texture of Lakeside Toweling make them a little more robust than your regular patchwork cottons. I always use my walking foot, when piecing cushions from toweling, I find it helps to sew through all the layers very easily.
The Sand Drift Pillows (PTT-221) pattern contains two appliqué pillows and one plain pillow. You can see the texture of the slubby thread stripe on the cream appliqué background, and on the square pillow in this photograph. Texture is very popular for home décor at present, and these textured fabrics certainly fit the bill.
Applique on toweling is wonderful, because the fabric is a little heavier weight, I never need to use any stabiliser to obtain a good result.
There is also a 60” wide cotton, textured throw made with the Lakeside Toweling. Once again, on my Blog is a video about how to fringe the toweling to make a throw. This is also available on my YouTube channel, Pieces to Treasure.
Other pillow patterns, made with Lakeside Toweling include the Lazy Days Relaxing Pillows (PTT-219) and the Square Floor Pillows (PTT-222).
The Lazy Days Relaxing Pillows come in three sizes - 30", 34" and 48" in diameter - and are big enough to lay on by the fire, or the pool.
The cover zip off for easy cleaning and will be a very popular addition to your family room.
Bags are sturdy when made with Moda Toweling.
The Convertible Bag (PTT-218) is one that does double duty as a shoulder bag and also a backpack. Just separate and pull the straps, and the back becomes a backpack, leaving you with two free hands!
Lakeside Toweling can be used on the outside and the lining and your bag is washable too.
The Lagoon Totes (PTT-220) feature two tote bags in the one pattern. The off white tote features the thick textured stripe and Boro style patches and pockets to decorate the bag. The tan and black tote, features patches of toweling, pieced together and two external pockets. Both bags have an internal zip pocket and measure 14” x 17” x 4”.
Table Runners are perfect projects to make with Moda Toweling, and Lakeside Toweling is no exception.
The Homebody Runner pattern (PTT 216) pattern includes templates for both the Home and Joy versions of this runner. The appliqué can be completed with either fused or needleturn appliqué.
While on the subject of table scapes, the Berry and Bright table topper (PTT 224) is a sweet appliqué project for Christmas. Featuring Lakeside Toweling as the appliqué background, a perfect mix of prints that coordinate with the woven stripes is used for the appliqué wreath and pieced border. Finished size 20” x 20”.
The Foodie Friend (PTT 231) is a useful addition to your kitchen. Designed to carry plates, bowls and casserole dishes, this quick project will delight even the beginner sewer.
Choose one toweling for the outside and another for the lining, this one is great for a class that hasn’t sewn with toweling before. The ‘Bon Appetit’ stitchery is an optional addition.
I hope you enjoy sewing with Lakeside Toweling - and my other towelings - as much as I do.
Jenelle
