We’re thrilled to kick off another season of Moda Blockheads—and we’re so glad you’re here! Whether this is your sixth round with us or your very first, we’ve got an exciting journey ahead. Blockheads 6 is packed with inspiration, skill-building, and community fun, and we can’t wait to sew along with you each week.

Welcome to Moda Blockheads 6!

We've got a short intro video for you that walks you through some of the basics for our new round of Blockheads. Be sure to check it out below, and go ahead and subscribe to our YouTube channel while you're there, so you never miss a new video or tutorial from the Moda team and designers!

What Is Blockheads?

Blockheads is a block-of-the-week program from Moda Fabrics, created with our amazing community and designer friends in mind. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure quilting experience. Every Wednesday, we release a free block pattern designed by one of our Moda designers—along with helpful cutting instructions, weekly video tutorials, and plenty of inspiration to make the block your own.

It’s not a traditional mystery quilt where we all end up with the same final layout. Instead, it’s a flexible, skill-building series where YOU decide how to put your blocks together. Turn them into one quilt, a set of smaller projects, or something totally unique. No rules here—just creativity!

Meet the Designers

Blockheads 6 features 24 incredible Moda designers, and each one will take a turn in the spotlight! Each week, our featured designer will share their block along with personal tips, tricks, and ideas for how they’re using it. Keep an eye on our blog and social channels to catch each designer’s post and be inspired by their process.

Our Blockheads 6 designers are:

How It Works

New Block Every Wednesday: A fresh pattern drops weekly by 8AM Central.

Where to Find It:

Weekly Videos

We’re bringing back our weekly video tutorials that were a hit last year! These short videos walk you through each block and offer bonus tips to help make sewing even smoother. Some designers will also share their own mini video clips—so be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel so you never miss one!

Block Sizes & Fabric Suggestions

We love seeing everyone’s fabric pulls! Isn’t that the best thing about quilting? The same blocks can look totally different based on fabric choices and placement. This year’s block sizes range from 9" all the way up to 27", giving you tons of creative options.

Fabric-wise, we recommend starting with:

30–35 fat quarters
3–4 yards of background fabric

That is a great start for making the just the blocks. You can definitely add in layer cakes or other precuts, but you may need additional yardage for the larger blocks. You might also need additional yardage for your chosen setting option – the designers will share more about their setting options over the course of the series.

Solids are always a great option, especially with a sampler quilt that doesn’t have exact fabric requirements or the most efficient cutting. Several of us on the Moda team – Alison, Annie, and Sarah – are sewing with solids! But we love going scrappy, too. You’ll see blocks from Lissa using a soft and scrappy Americana palette; Alison is mixing prints from Corey Yoder and Heather Briggs for some of her blocks; and Anna is using prints from Jen Kingwell’s latest collection.

My Favorite Color is Moda 2 — What’s That?

You might have heard some buzz about My Favorite Color is Moda 2—and yes, you’re right! It features many of the same blocks that you’ll see each week in Blockheads 6. But here’s the key difference: Blockheads 6 is still very much a skill-building, weekly sew-along designed to let you explore, experiment, and create in a community of makers.

We understand that some quilters might have been surprised to see this available as a for-purchase printed pattern. But here’s the silver lining: My Favorite Color is Moda 2 is a helpful tool that works alongside Blockheads 6, especially for those who:

  • Prefer to have all the information up front
  • Want specific fabric requirements to guide their planning
  • Love the convenience of a printed pattern instead of downloading and printing each week

So while Blockheads 6 invites you to grow your skills, connect weekly, and enjoy the mystery as it unfolds, My Favorite Color is Moda 2 offers a structured roadmap for quilters who love a clear, full-picture approach.

The best part? You can choose the path that suits your quilting style best—or even use both together!

Get Ready to Sew!

Before we dive in, here are a few prep tips:

  • Give your machine some TLC: clean, oil, change your needle, and wind those bobbins
  • Starch your fabric, if that’s your thing
  • Join our Moda Blockheads Facebook Group, where nearly 78,000 quilters are ready to cheer you on!
  • Bookmark the Blockheads 6 Archive Page for easy access to each week’s pattern and blog post
  • And don’t forget to share your blocks on social using #Blockheads6 so we can all follow along with your progress.

Let’s Do This!

The first block pattern will be released Wednesday, May 28, and a new pattern will drop every Wednesday through November 12. We can’t wait to see the blocks you create, the skills you build, and the community that continues to grow.

Thanks for being part of this incredible journey. Now, fire up those sewing machines—and happy stitching!
